The Friday Boost 19/3 - Some good news to start the weekend!
Today we have two huge steps forward medically, and some inspiration for our own steps forward this weekend.
Groundbreaking HIV Drug now available in the UK
Around 32 millions lives have been lost due to the AIDS virus. The medicine available now is nothing less than miraculous for helping people live long, healthy lives, probably one of the greatest advances in our generation.
NHS England announced the anti-HIV drug, PrEP, will finally be routinely available. The drug, which is up to 100% effective at stopping HIV, has – until now – only been available via a capped trial.
HIV charity The Terrence Higgins Trust called the move a “game-changer” for HIV prevention. “We know PrEP is highly effective at stopping HIV and now it can be properly utilised to make good on the Government’s commitment to ending HIV transmissions by 2030,” chief executive Ian Green said.

2. NHS begins to roll out at home HPV (Cervical Cancer) screening kits for women.
It is the first time home smear tests have been trialled in England and is being rolled out through 166 GP practices, as part of the national NHS Cervical Screening Programme.
Research has shown that embarrassment is often a key underlying reason for women not attending a smear test appointment, as well as cultural barriers and fear about what it involves.
“Self-sampling is a game-changer for cervical screening,” said Dr Anita Lim from King’s College London, which is leading the trial with Public Health England and the NHS. “A variety of barriers can stop women from coming, even though it can be a life-saving test.”
She added: “These could be for physical, practical or personal reasons, as well as social or cultural taboo. This simple and convenient vaginal swab can be taken in the privacy and comfort of your own home.”

3. Free NT!
The National Trust have kept many parks and gardens open for free, helping many to enjoy some beautiful, peaceful spots free of charge. I had no idea about this, so very happy to come across this good news myself! So maybe a new walk this weekend?
Have a great weekend, stay optimistic as much as you can, and try and get some exercise in 😉
